Hydrating skin injections: why do my results fade so quickly?

Dr. Park Hyungkwon2025.12.17

"I had hydration injections, but my skin was back to normal in two weeks." "My friend says hers lasts two months. Is mine unusually short?"

These are the comments I hear most often at follow-up consultations for skin-hydration injections.

First, duration varies from person to person, even when the same amount of the same product is used. This does not necessarily mean the procedure was performed incorrectly; skin uses up hyaluronic acid at different rates.

I do not promise a definite duration to a first-time patient. Only after observing the first session's course can I discuss an interval appropriate for that person.

Why is hyaluronic acid used up?

Hyaluronic acid, the main ingredient in these injections, is naturally present in our skin. It can bind several hundred times its weight in water, so placing it in a shallow skin layer can be expected to add hydration and glow. The issue is that our bodies already contain enzymes that break it down. Injected hyaluronic acid naturally degrades and is used up over time. Duration depends on skin condition and lifestyle, but the effect generally diminishes gradually over several weeks to several months.

Some people ask, "Then is there any reason to have it?" The short answer is yes. However good their ingredients, cosmetics have a limit to how deeply they can reach because of the skin barrier. Hydration injections deliver moisture directly to a depth that cosmetics cannot reach. It is more accurate, however, to understand them as a treatment replenished when needed, rather than a one-off procedure. Knowing this premise before starting can make a difference to satisfaction.

Lifestyle often influences duration as much as the procedure

There are reasons the same procedure can seem to last different lengths of time. When water intake is low, sleep is insufficient or sun exposure is high, hyaluronic acid may seem to be used up faster. The same applies in winter when indoor heating makes the air dry. When I hear, "It lasted a long time last time, but faded quickly this time," it is often the person's lifestyle that has changed rather than the procedure. This is why daily care must accompany treatment. Conversely, drinking enough water, protecting against the sun and moisturizing may help extend how long the same procedure feels effective. Treatment creates the foundation; everyday habits ultimately help maintain it.

Care immediately after treatment can also affect duration. On the day, avoid rubbing or strongly irritating the treated area, and I recommend postponing heat-generating activities such as saunas or strenuous exercise for a few days. Simply reducing irritation while the needle sites heal may help redness and bruising settle. These small habits can change how the same treatment feels.

If the effect is short-lived, there are other options

I am often asked, "Repeating the injections is inconvenient. Is there another way?" Hyaluronic acid products can differ in their formulation. SKINVIVE uses crosslinked hyaluronic acid to slow degradation and is closer to a longer-lasting option. Its aim is less an immediate dewy glow and more maintaining the skin's hydration environment for a relatively long period. The choice can therefore be framed this way: conventional hydration injections for someone who needs quick hydration before an important occasion; a longer-lasting option such as SKINVIVE for someone who finds frequent top-ups inconvenient and wants steady hydration; or using the two at different times. With either option, planning intervals matters if treatment continues over multiple sessions. For repeated hydration injections, the next session is usually determined at intervals of several weeks by assessing dryness. Think of replenishing according to how quickly the skin dries out rather than mechanically repeating a fixed calendar schedule. If you are curious about the principle of treatment across sessions, I recommend reading more alongside this column.

How I explain the options

For people seeking skin-hydration injections in Cheongdam, I do not exaggerate how long results last. Instead, I first ask what condition they want and by when, then we decide together whether to continue hydration injections at intervals, choose a longer-lasting option such as SKINVIVE or use the two at different times. As the sole treating doctor, I personally check dryness at every session and adjust the interval even during a course of treatment. I believe adapting the plan to what the skin shows is ultimately better than mechanically repeating the original schedule. We are one minute from Exit 4 of Apgujeong Rodeo Station, making frequent visits more convenient, and parking is free.

Assessing the skin and consulting in a private treatment room

Because hydration injections use needles, needle marks, redness and bruising can last several days, and small lumps may occasionally be felt. The degree of perceived hydration and duration vary between individuals.

If you feel hydration injections fade quickly, I recommend checking injection depth and intervals before changing the product. Choose a practice that explains both.
