ONDA lifting is a noninvasive procedure using microwave energy to target both submental fat and sagging.
Clinical reports describe significant improvement in laxity scores after 6 sessions, while a newer device showed changes after just 2 sessions.
However, the evidence base remains small, so individual variation must be considered.
➊What is ONDA lifting?
ONDA lifting is noninvasive body contouring that delivers 2.45GHz microwave energy to subcutaneous fat, targeting both fat-cell breakdown and dermal collagen remodeling.
The key principle is selective heating of the underlying fat layer while continuous cooling protects the skin surface.
It is used for localized fat under the chin, on the abdomen and flanks; the double-chin area has a relatively substantial body of brand-specific clinical research.
It is more accurate to view it as improving localized volume and firmness, rather than completely removing fat.
➋How does it differ from Thermage and Ultherapy?
Even among lifting treatments, the layers reached by the energy differ.
Radiofrequency broadly heats the dermis to improve firmness, while focused ultrasound concentrates energy point by point as deep as the fascial layer.
ONDA differs in its target layer: microwaves reach subcutaneous fat and impose metabolic stress on fat cells themselves.
The choice therefore depends on whether jawline firmness alone is the issue or fat is also present under the chin.
ONDA is considered first when fat and sagging coexist; radiofrequency or ultrasound may also be considered when loss of firmness is prominent.
| Category | Main target layer | Main objective |
|---|---|---|
| ONDA lifting | Subcutaneous fat | Localized fat reduction and improved sagging |
| Radiofrequency (dermal heating) | Dermis | Firmness and tightening |
| Focused ultrasound | Fascial layer | Deep-layer lifting |
“ONDA does not burn fat; it induces changes in fat cells and helps the body process them itself.”
➌Is it right for my double chin?
Double chins broadly arise from fat accumulation or skin sagging.
According to criteria proposed by an international advisory board, the most suitable candidates are non-obese people with localized fat and mild to moderate laxity.
If sagging originates in muscle itself or deeper structures beneath the fascia rather than the skin, ONDA alone may not deliver the expected change.
In such cases, it is realistic to discuss other approaches during consultation.
- ✓Fat-related double chin: focus on fat reduction with ONDA
- ✓Sagging-related double chin: consider a combination aimed at firmness
- ✓Mixed fat and sagging: tailor session planning to the objective
➍When do effects appear, and how many sessions are needed?
A clinical report using 6 ten-minute submental sessions at 2-week intervals found a significant improvement in laxity scores from baseline; around 70% rated themselves satisfied or better at 12 weeks.
More recently, a small study using a new handpiece for just 2 ten-minute sessions one month apart also found improved laxity scores.
However, this involved only around 10 participants, and no comparative study has yet established superiority.
Noticeable changes often develop gradually from around 4 weeks, with individual variation.
| Category | Sessions | Interval | Follow-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under chin (older handpiece) | 6 sessions | 2 weeks | 12 weeks |
| Under chin (new handpiece) | 2 sessions | 4 weeks | 12 weeks |
| Abdomen | 4 sessions | 4 weeks | 12 weeks (3 months) |

➎Adverse effects and precautions
Clinical reports describe possible temporary erythema, tenderness, warmth and, rarely, palpable nodules.
Nodules are thought to arise during fat breakdown and usually settle naturally within several months, but very rarely persist longer, making follow-up necessary.
A thorough prior consultation is needed for people taking anticoagulants, those with scars, tattoos or structural abnormalities in the treatment area, and those with thyroid disease.
All three clinical studies reported few adverse effects, but these were short-term follow-ups involving only 10–48 participants.
➏When it is suitable and when it is not
I prioritize ONDA for people with localized under-chin fat and some laxity who find procedures requiring recovery time burdensome.
Although liposuction remains a standard for localized fat reduction, ONDA can be a practical alternative for those who do not want surgery.
If fat volume is substantial or the primary cause is structural sagging, results may fall short, so I also discuss other approaches.
Recommending treatment unconditionally may be easier for a clinic, but explaining when it does not fit is ultimately more helpful to patients.
We assess fat volume, skin elasticity and the desired degree of change together during consultation (individual results vary).
“The right treatment depends on whether a double chin comes from fat or sagging; this distinction is where selection begins.”

QFrequently asked questions
Clinical reports include 6 sessions two weeks apart and 2 sessions one month apart using a newer device.
The number depends on device generation and your condition, so individualized guidance at consultation is most accurate.
Pain was recorded as relatively low in clinical reports, but varies with sensitivity and treatment area.
Liposuction remains the standard for localized fat reduction, but a noninvasive option may suit those avoiding downtime or seeking moderate improvement.
The choice depends on goals and expectations.
Temporary erythema, swelling or palpable nodules can occur, most of which settle over time.
The small size of the available clinical studies should also be considered.
It is reported to suit non-obese people with localized fat and mild to moderate laxity. Marked structural sagging or certain medical conditions require assessment at consultation.
We assess submental fat and laxity at consultation, then design a suitable protocol.
The number and method of sessions are determined after examination according to individual condition (results vary).
